The Order That Looked Right Until It Wasn’t
A fabricator once ordered “galvanized sheets” for a roofing job. What showed up worked fine for six months, then started rusting at the edges. Turns out he needed GP sheets, not GI sheets, and nobody on either end had asked the right question.
This mix-up happens more than it should. GP and GI sheets look almost identical on paper. Both are galvanized. Both are steel. But the coating process, the finish, and where each one actually belongs on a project are different enough to matter.
Here’s how to tell them apart before you place the order, not after it arrives.
What GP Sheet Actually Means
GP stands for Galvanized Plain. It’s a cold-rolled or hot-rolled steel sheet coated with a layer of zinc through a continuous hot-dip process, then left with a plain, uncoated surface finish.
GP sheets are the workhorse option. They’re used where the zinc coating needs to protect against rust, but the surface itself doesn’t need to look polished, because it’s going to be painted, powder-coated, or hidden inside a structure anyway.
Where GP sheets show up: structural framing, HVAC ducting, general fabrication, automotive underbody parts, and anywhere the sheet gets a paint or coating layer applied after fabrication.

What GI Sheet Actually Means
GI stands for Galvanized Iron, though in practice it refers to the same base steel process as GP, with one key difference: GI sheets go through an additional treatment (often a spangle finish or chromate passivation) that leaves a smoother, more corrosion-resistant, and more presentable surface.
GI sheets cost a bit more, but they’re built for situations where the surface is staying exposed, or where the environment is more aggressive on bare metal.
Where GI sheets show up: roofing sheets, cladding, outdoor enclosures, agricultural sheds, and any application where the galvanized surface is the final surface, not a base layer for something else.

Three Questions That Settle It
- Will the surface stay exposed to weather? If yes, lean GI. If it’s getting painted or hidden inside an assembly, GP is the more cost-effective choice.
- Is this a roofing or cladding job? GI is the standard choice here across Indian construction and agricultural sheds.
- Is this going into a fabricated product that gets its own coating later? GP is built for exactly that step.
A Mistake Worth Avoiding
Buyers sometimes assume GI is simply the “better” version of GP and default to it everywhere, thinking extra corrosion resistance can’t hurt. It can hurt your budget on large orders, and it doesn’t add value on parts that get painted anyway. Matching the sheet to the actual end use saves money without giving up protection where it counts.
The same applies in reverse. Using GP sheet on an exposed roofing application to save cost usually means repainting or replacing it sooner than expected.
