This happens more often than buyers admit. Steel looks simple to buy. It is not. Here are the seven mistakes we see most often, and how to make sure they never happen to you.
1. Buying on Price Alone
The lowest quote is rarely the lowest cost. A cheaper rate per kg usually means thinner tolerance, weaker certification, or older stock. Always compare price against grade, tolerance, and test certificate together, not price by itself.
2. Skipping the Test Certificate
Every batch of structural steel should come with a mill test certificate showing chemical composition and mechanical properties. Buyers who skip asking for this find out the hard way, usually at the site, not the yard.
3. Ignoring Weight Tolerance
Steel plates and coils carry a permissible weight tolerance. Some suppliers quietly supply at the lower edge of that tolerance on every order. Over a large project, that adds up to real tonnage you paid for but never received. Ask for actual weighment slips, not theoretical weight.
4. Not Checking Stock Consistency
A supplier who is in stock today and out next week forces you to split orders across vendors mid-project. That creates mismatched batches on the same site. Before committing to a supplier, ask how they manage stock during high-demand months, not just what they have right now.
5. Picking the Wrong Grade to Save Money
Fe 415 instead of Fe 500 for a structural column. IS 2062 E250 where E350 was specified. These substitutions happen when buyers let the supplier “suggest something cheaper” without checking the drawing first. The saving on paper becomes a liability on site.
6. No Inspection Before Dispatch
For large orders, a pre-dispatch inspection takes one phone call and costs nothing. Skipping it means the first time you see the material properly is when it is already on your site, and by then, returns are expensive and slow.
7. Relying on a Single Supplier
One delayed delivery from your only supplier can stall an entire project. Buyers who keep a second, pre-vetted supplier on standby lose almost no time when the primary source runs short.
