This happens more than suppliers admit. Steel plates look simple on paper. Buying the right one isn’t.
What Counts as a “Steel Plate”
A steel plate is any flat rolled steel product thicker than 6mm. Below that, it’s classified as sheet. That single number changes how the product is priced, how it’s handled, and what it’s used for.
Plates come in a few standard types:
- MS Plates (Mild Steel): The default choice for structural work, base plates, and general fabrication. Affordable, weldable, widely stocked.
- Boiler Quality Plates: Used where pressure and heat resistance matter. Pressure vessels, boilers, tanks.
- Hot Rolled Plates: Made at high temperature, rolled while still soft. Cheaper, less precise on thickness, fine for most structural use.
- Cold Rolled Plates: Rolled at room temperature after hot rolling. Tighter tolerances, smoother finish, higher cost. Used where dimensional accuracy matters.
Why Thickness Is the First Decision, Not the Last
Buyers often pick thickness based on habit. “We always order 10mm.” That’s how budgets get blown and structures get over-engineered.
Thickness should follow load calculation, not the other way round. A base plate under a light structural column needs far less steel than a plate reinforcing a heavy machine foundation. Buying thicker than needed doesn’t add safety margin worth paying for. It adds dead weight and cost.
Standard plate thicknesses used across Indian construction and fabrication:
- 6mm – 10mm: Light fabrication, cladding, ducting
- 12mm – 20mm: Base plates, general structural work
- 25mm – 40mm: Heavy machine bases, foundation plates
- 50mm and above: Pressure vessels, heavy engineering, specialized industrial use
The Weight Chart Every Buyer Should Keep Handy
Steel plate weight is calculated using a simple formula: Weight (kg) = Length (m) x Width (m) x Thickness (mm) x 7.85
7.85 is the density constant for mild steel in kg per square metre per mm thickness. This one number is why transport quotes, crane capacity, and site handling plans all depend on getting your plate spec right before you order.
Example: A 2m x 1m plate at 12mm thickness weighs 2 x 1 x 12 x 7.85 = 188.4 kg.
Get the thickness wrong by even a few millimetres on a large order, and your weight estimate is off by hundreds of kilos. That mistake shows up on the truck, not on paper.
Questions to Ask Before You Order
- What’s the load or pressure the plate needs to handle?
- Does the application need welding? Not all grades weld the same way.
- Is dimensional accuracy critical, or is standard tolerance fine?
- What’s the total weight, and does your site have the equipment to handle it?
- Is the supplier quoting mill-certified material, or unverified stock?
Skip these questions and you’re not buying steel. You’re gambling with your project timeline.
